Carina Lau Discusses Dedication in Acting: Unfair to Compare Across Different Ages

Recently, Hong Kong's leading lady, Carina Lau, shared her thoughts in an interview: Comparing the acting skills of a 20-year-old actor with a 60-year-old is actually quite unfair.

A reporter posed the question: Many audiences often reminisce about the dedication and hard work of the older generation of Hong Kong actors, feeling that the paths of many young actors today are much smoother. Carina Lau responded by saying, "It's truly not a fair comparison. Each actor has their own approach. Just like the muscles inside you, every muscle is different. You know how to convey emotions, but you can't control the way the muscles move. Additionally, life experiences are distinct. The paths of today's generation are different from the struggles we faced."

Hence, I can't say that today's actors are not good, because each person's life is unique within their era, and their perspectives are diverse. If you compare a 20-year-old with me, I find it very unfair. They've only had 20 years to explore this world, absorb experiences for only 20 years, while I've accumulated over 60 years' worth. I've encountered more bumps and hurdles.

As for myself, looking back at my performances at 18 and 20 years old, I also feel they weren't great, but I did my best at that time. Starting at 14, I became an actress at Shaw Brothers, once the first "action queen" of Hong Kong. However, years of accumulated injuries forced me to leave the film industry for many years. Later on, I made a comeback, challenging a broader range of roles. Piece by piece, classic works and accolades molded my legendary journey.

In the movie "I Love You!", I portrayed an elderly scavenger. Confronted with unexpected love, I cherish and am moved by it, yet also burdened with worries. My performance doesn't seem like acting, but rather a real-life story happening around us.
