According to Vista Views, Hong Kong director Peng Fat recently declared bankruptcy due to depleting savings to treat his wife's cancer. Over the past year, he sought loans and fundraising but, unable to secure projects, ended up owing 2 million HKD, unable to repay. Peng Fat's wife, a cancer survivor, faced a severe lung cancer diagnosis in February, leading him to exhaust all savings for medical expenses.
During his financial struggle, Peng Fat expressed willingness to take on editing projects, yet lacking industry connections and hampered by caregiving responsibilities, he found it challenging to secure work. Unable to provide stable income proof for bank loans, he turned to private lending firms, accumulating a debt snowball totaling 2 million HKD.
In an interview, Peng Fat revealed that his elder brother, Peng Shun, and sister-in-law, Li Xinjie, offered assistance, but it was not a long-term solution. Forced by circumstances, he had no choice but to file for bankruptcy. Peng Fat admitted contemplating suicide with his wife but decided to face the challenges bravely, stating, "If we're not afraid of death, what else is there to worry about?"
Emphasizing that his bankruptcy application is not an attempt to evade responsibility, Peng Fat hopes financial companies will grant him time, expressing confidence in repaying debts if given work opportunities. Peng Fat and his brother Peng Shun, collectively known as the "Peng Brothers," are renowned directors in Hong Kong, having directed films like "Creation of the Gods," "Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms," and "Oppenheimer."
