"Shazam 2" Star Expresses Confusion Over Low Ratings: Toxic Online Environment
2023-07-27
Zachary Levi recently discussed the future of the movie "Shazam!" and expressed uncertainty. He said he was puzzled and baffled by the low ratings given by critics to "Shazam 2" and found people to be extremely unfriendly. He also pointed out that the online environment has become increasingly toxic, with some individuals trying to sabotage a movie project simply because they dislike it.
Levi stated on The FilmUp Podcast, "I don't know what the future holds for it ("Shazam") because, unfortunately, the second movie didn't receive the desired response. The audience's ratings were still pretty good, but the critics' low ratings were strange and confusing, and people were extremely hostile."
He acknowledged that he has been involved in some projects that he hoped would turn out great but knew they were just okay. Similarly, he recognized that "Shazam 2" is not a perfect masterpiece like Orson Welles' works, but it is a good movie.
Levi also commented on the significant changes from "Shazam 1" to "Shazam 2" in terms of the world and social media environment. He said, "This world and the transformation of social media have been enormous, with escalating hatred, online animosity, trolls, and detractors taking sides. All this toxicity has intensified. Unfortunately, I believe there are people out there who genuinely want to destroy specific projects simply because they don't like the project itself, or they don't like me, or they don't like other people involved in the project, or whatever reasons they may have."
He expressed uncertainty about the future of "Shazam" but hoped that when people watch "Shazam 2" on streaming platforms or flights, they will feel differently than what they have heard (something not as bad as they might think).
