The Screenwriters Guild of America proposes to allow AI to write scripts, provided it does not affect screenwriters' income

According to US media reports, the American Screenwriters Guild plans to allow artificial intelligence software represented by ChatGPT to be used in the script creation process, provided that it does not affect the screenwriter's signature and share.

The Writers Guild of America has previously emphasized that it will regulate the use of artificial intelligence in the screenwriting process after many screenwriters expressed concern about losing their jobs. However, unlike outside expectations, the union did not prohibit the use of AI technology, but allowed screenwriters to use ChatGPT to complete the script, and still retain their signature and share. That is, a studio executive could hand over an AI-generated script to a writer for rewriting or polishing, but that writer would still be considered the lead writer on the project.

The Writers Guild's initiative sees AI as a tool. The purpose of this is to allow screenwriters to benefit from the technology and avoid getting into authorship disputes with software developers. However, this initiative does not take into account the fact that the script is fully AI-generated without the participation of real people.

The Writers Guild raised the issue Monday in its first round of negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the major studios. It's not yet clear whether AMPTP will take up the idea.
