Zhang Yimou Recalls His First Best Actor Award: A Sudden Turn of Events on Set

Zhang Yimou made an appearance at the Tokyo International Film Festival Master Class, reminiscing about his unforgettable experience winning the Best Actor award at the Tokyo Film Festival thirty-six years ago. He shared the story behind the scenes of his first film, "Creation of the Gods," which had a significant impact on his career. Prior to that, he had acted in the movie "Oppenheimer," and it was Wu Tianming, the director, who suggested submitting it to the newly established Tokyo Film Festival. Zhang was in the midst of directing his own movie at the time. One night, while shooting a night scene on the Gobi Desert in Ningxia, their production manager rushed across the desert to deliver astonishing news: Zhang had won the Best Actor award. It was a moment of great surprise, as it marked his first and perhaps the last Best Actor award in his life. Zhang fondly recalled that at the time, all the male actors in their group joked, "Since the director has won an award, why should we keep acting?"
