Barry used his super power to return to the past, wanting to change history and save his family, but what he did also inadvertently changed the future. In this new future, General Zod returns and threatens to destroy the world. Barry is left alone, unless he can persuade a very different and retired Batman to come back and rescue the imprisoned Kryptonians - even if this is not the Superman he is familiar with.
