Dungeons & Dragons Movie Fails to Break Even with Final Box Office of Only $208 Million

The Dungeons & Dragons movie, with its highest revenue in North America reaching $93 million by the end of this month, has a global final box office of around $208 million (including $82.3 million from Mainland China, where some markets are still showing the film but with minimal daily growth).

With a production budget of $150 million, the box office numbers are insufficient to support breaking even and greenlighting a sequel, which is a setback for the fantasy adventure genre and the adaptation of the DnD IP. The film currently holds a rating of 7.6 on Douban, and its word-of-mouth is not bad.

Edgar (Chris Pine) is a bard who, in a treasure heist, causes the death of his wife due to his greed. Afterwards, the barbarian Horge (Michelle Rodriguez) appears in Edgar's desolate life, and they together raise their daughter, Kira (Chloe Coleman).

After Kira grows up, Edgar, Horge, and Kira's uncle, Fochi (Hugh Grant), form a treasure heist team. However, in one operation, they fail and Edgar and Horge end up in jail. Years later, Edgar and Horge join forces to escape from prison and decide to retrieve the treasure they missed years ago. In order to achieve their goal, they also recruit a novice sorcerer, Simon (Justice Smith), and a druid girl, Doric (Sophia Lillis). Just as Edgar and his companions get closer to the treasure, Fochi, who escaped with Kira back then, gradually reveals his true identity.
